Note
The gastric lap band was once the most popular obesity surgery for those suffering from obesity, however, it has now been superseded by the more effective Gastric Sleeve Surgery.
The lap band procedure was introduced in the 1970’s and involved a fixed, non-adjustable band. Due to its permanent nature, patients suffered pouch dilation and vomiting. The band was then revised to become adjustable and since then the operation has seen much better patient outcomes however it is known to be less effective than the now more popular gastric sleeve for treating obesity and in particular those who are morbidly obese.
