Note
Freshwater pearls, on the market today, typically originate in Chinese lakes, and rivers (Japan, and the US, comprise a small fraction of the market). These are the most affordable pearl variety, and offer premium value, and excellent quality, at reasonable prices. Freshwater mussels may produce up to 50 pearls simultaneously, compared to the 2-5 pearls typically produced by saltwater mussels.
Cultured pearls are deliberately farmed, and cultivated with specific, controlled, debris insertion, whereas natural pearls occur through accidental, uncontrolled, debris insertion.
Cultured freshwater pearls provide a range of colors and shapes, which can be used to compliment modern designs, and jewellery style.
