Note
The process of sewage treatment involves eliminating impurities from municipal wastewater, which primarily consists of sewage from homes and some industrial effluent. To remove impurities and create treated wastewater (or treated effluent) that is safe to release into the environment, physical, chemical, and biological techniques are used. Sewage sludge is a semi-solid waste or slurry that is produced as a byproduct of sewage treatment. Before being appropriate for disposal or application to land, the sludge must undergo additional treatment. Three phases, referred to as primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment, are often included in sewage treatment. The first stage of treatment involves briefly keeping the sewage in a still basin so that heavier solids can sink to the bottom and lighter solids, such as oil and grease, can float to the top.
