Gum disease lead to gingivitis or periodontitis is the main cause for tooth loss in adults. Periodontitis is the inflammation of the gums and other structures that support the teeth. It is caused by bacteria and is characterised by red, swollen, bleeding gums, loose teeth and bad breath. If periodontitis is left untreated it progresses and ultimately results in loss of teeth.
