The book was written by Patricia Reiss Brooks and is a captivating tale of varying quality. The plot is interesting. Alice Devlin, a newlywed, contracts TB and travels to Saranac Lake to receive the suggested treatment. Joe, Alice's husband, embarks on an epic snowshoe trip north from their New York City home to be at her side. The cure for tuberculosis at the time was doing absolutely nothing for an extended time and sleeping outside, even in the cold, on the porches of the cure cottages. Patients in upper New York state, one of two or three geographic locations most famed for their tuberculosis treatments, were treated far better than those in hospital wards. Throughout
