.::ACL Institute 2024::.

Registration for the 2024 ACL Institute is now available. Join ACL at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, Thursday, June 26 – Saturday, June 29.

The draft agenda for this summer’s Institute is available on the website. There are in-person and virtual options.

All Institute information, including registration links for the hotels, is on the Institute Page.

.::IJCL Membership Information 2023-2024::.

There are two steps to registration: State & Nationals. Please make sure to complete both steps.

State Registration

All Indiana membership work should be done through the state site first. We collect money for both state and national dues to make it easier for you and your treasurer.

Chapter dues are currently $35 ($15 for state and $20 for national).

Individual member dues are currently $9 ($6 for state and $3 for national).

We also offer you the opportunity to renew your ACL membership through us as well (helpful if your school will pay that for you)

Click on the following documents for specific directions:

Remember that you are expected to submit payment for an invoice within a week after generating the invoice. This really helps us keep current with the national office.

If you currently have an IJCL State Officer or a Sponsored Student in your chapter, please do not register them in your first round of registration. Please create an invoice for them separately.

National Registration

After you register with the state, please follow the directions in this document so that you generate an invoice that we’ll be able to use to pay for your national dues (you don’t need to send them any money!):

2023-2024 Indiana Membership Directions from National Office

For the low price of a $20 donation to one of the IJCL funds (Scholarship, Bartlow, Sponsor-a-Student, Leadership, National Convention Participation), the IJCL Co-Chairs will complete your NJCL Membership for you!  If you used the service last year, please be sure to donate again for this year.

Use this link to donate: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/785c4058-f0d9-4d7a-9f27-4d885d59d68f

After you make your donation, please send your ACL/NJCL password to chair@ijcl.org. For security purposes, do not send your username as we can look that up.

If you need any help, please contact us at chair@ijcl.org.

.::National Convention 2023 Recap::.

Approximately 1,200 students, teachers, and chaperones from across the United States gathered at the 70th annual National Junior Classical League (NJCL) Convention held at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and virtually from July 23 to 28. Among those were 24 delegates from the Indiana Junior Classical League (IJCL), including high school students, college students, and adult sponsors and chaperones. Hannah Banks attended her first convention with the Miller Fellowship and Lisanne Thorpe celebrated her 20th convention! Becki Bush also attended her 20th convention, and we will celebrate that when she goes back in person. Thank you to all of our adult sponsors & chaperones.

Students competed in academic, graphic art, creative art, and athletic events. Additionally, students participated in daily spirit competitions. The Indiana delegation placed first in the nation among small states for Tuesday’s spirit competition Fly Like an Eagle, Sting Like a Bee, led by IJCL 2nd Vice President Alfredo Ochoa of Cardinal Ritter High School. In addition, the state digital scrapbook, created by IJCL Historian Marieke Young of Bishop Chatard High School, earned second place in the nation.

In addition, students from across the state represented Indiana in the national Certamen tournament, a “Jeopardy!”-like competition with questions covering a range of topics about the ancient world. Jackson Herrera (Bishop Chatard HS), Lucas Johnson (Crown Point HS),  Hayden Smith (Crown Point HS), and Griffin Dellinger (North Central HS) competed at the advanced level.

Here is a link to the press release that you can copy, edit, brag about your chapter’s students, and send to local/school newspapers.

Next year’s NJCL Convention will be held July 22-27 at University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. We hope to see you and your students there!

.:: In Memory of Dennis Bartlow ::.

DennisBartlow
Dennis “Denny” Bartlow – our “Mr. IJCL” – passed away on May 21, 2013, at age 66. He had a long history with JCL, attending 51 NJCL and 52 IJCL conventions. His final IJCL Convention was being held at his beloved Indiana State University where he was often to be found cheering “Go Sycamores!” He enjoyed planning and attending the SCL reunions, travelling to visit family and friends, attending various sporting events – notably those of his Sycamores and the Florida Gators. He was also very active in his church – whether it involved singing in the choir, serving on various committees, or helping with the youth.
DennisBartlow

Although Denny spent much of his career living in Illinois, his heart was in Indiana. He was buried in his hometown of Montezuma, thus being “Back Home Again in Indiana.”

Visitation was from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 24, 2013, at the Montezuma Presbyterian Church, with services occurring at noon.

.:: Denny Memorial Tribute ::.

It was a sunny day as we gathered in Montezuma, Indiana to bid a fond farewell to JCL/SCL legend – our mentor and friend – Denny Bartlow. A gentle breeze was blowing, flowers were blooming, and everything was green. It serves as a reminder to me that although this is the end of our time on earth with Denny, the two organizations that he loved so much are still so alive and vital to all of us.

As people gathered that day, every time I looked up I saw new faces. There were Indiana teachers, retirees, and former state officers from one end of the state to the other – as difficult as it was for them to get there that day due to scheduling conflicts, personal issues, etc. Then there were those who traveled even greater distances; I saw faces from Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas. Some of those people truly went above and beyond to say one last goodbye to Denny. I would love to name everyone, but I am afraid that I would inadvertently miss someone. I would like to say a special “thank you” to Ed Long for the donation of his JCL and SCL pins so that Denny’s Indiana State University Sycamores sweatshirt and Cubs cap could look complete.

I had the privilege of speaking on behalf of the JCL and SCL at Denny’s services and as I looked out at the sea of faces in that packed church, I saw so many faces that I knew through those two organizations. As I spoke, looking out at those faces, I began to picture the faces of the all of those whose comments I have seen on Facebook and also those whom I have had the privilege of meeting at Denny’s side over the years at NJCL State Chairs’ Luncheons, “That’s Entertainment,” Sponsors and Chaperones Receptions, and all of the other NJCL events and all of the IJCL certamina and other events (including bus trips) – even those whose faces I could only imagine from his stories. Forget the church – Montezuma herself might not have been able to contain them all!

The outpouring of love for Denny has been a sight to behold and I have been privileged to have seen it, as much as I have been privileged to have been called a friend and colleague by Denny. He is now resting in “God’s country” as he used to say. Imagine that we’ve reached the state line; there’s the crackling of the intercom and Denny is announcing that we’re back in Indiana. This weekend, if you are a race fan – or via YouTube link if you are not – when you hear “Back Home Again in Indiana,” please think of Denny; I know I will.
